The promises Build & Learn Africa makes about every gift: what your designation means, how restricted funds are protected, and what happens in the edge cases — honestly stated before you give, not after.
When you give, you choose where your gift goes: a specific project, a specific milestone within a project, a programme (Build or Educate), a community, a country, a campaign, the highest-priority need, or the general fund. That choice is recorded with the donation and drives how the money is allocated in our ledger.
A designated gift is a restricted fund. It is tracked separately from unrestricted income, released only against the purpose you chose, and reported against that purpose. We do not quietly reallocate restricted gifts to plug gaps elsewhere. If a designated purpose genuinely cannot be fulfilled, the process below applies — and it always keeps your gift within a closely matching purpose or comes back to you.
Fundraising is not an exact science, and a well-loved project can pass its goal. Each project states its own overfunding policy on its page before you give. The default order is:
Restricted gifts always remain restricted to a matching purpose at each step, and the project page discloses where overfunding went.
Rarely, a verified project stalls for reasons beyond anyone’s control — a land dispute, a leadership change, a natural disaster. If a project is cancelled before your gift is spent, we will contact you and offer to redirect your gift to the closest matching purpose or, if you prefer, process a refund under the refund policy.
Your gift funds the project work you chose and the real costs that protect it: verification, milestone inspection and oversight, administration, and payment processing fees. We do not claim that “100% goes to the field”, because running a trustworthy platform genuinely costs money. The full explanation is on the transparency page.
You are charged the amount shown at checkout in the processing currency. Any amount displayed in another currency beforehand is an estimate based on recent exchange rates; your bank or mobile money provider may apply its own rate and fees.
Card gifts can renew automatically each month until you cancel. M-PESA and most mobile money channels do not support automatic charges, so monthly giving there works by reminder: we email you a one-tap link each month and you complete the gift yourself. Either kind can be changed, paused or stopped at any time from your account or by contacting us.
Every successful donation generates an emailed receipt with a unique receipt number. We make no representation that donations are tax-deductible in your country — please take advice from a qualified tax professional. [Configure: legal entity details and any applicable tax status statements — confirm at legal review]
We may decline or return a gift where accepting it would breach the law, sanctions, our safeguarding commitments, or where the source of funds raises concerns we cannot resolve.
